From the Edgar-Award winning author of Beast in View, this landmark novel of domestic suspense is a gripping tale of ordinary lives ripped apart by lust, deceit, adultery, conspiracy and betrayal.

On a Saturday night in April, Ron Galloway's friends have all arrived at his Ontario lakeside vacation lodge for a boys' weekend without their wives. But as the night wears on and the host himself doesn't arrive, the party turns sour. Then Ron Galloway's suspicious wife, convinced he is having an affair and trying to track him down, arrives on the scene, followed by the police. It is clear something is very wrong.

In the hours and days that follow Ron Galloway's disappearance, the secret of an ugly infidelity comes to light, tearing apart Galloway's circle of friends and destroying two marriages. Did Ron Galloway commit suicide to escape his own unforgivable betrayals? What sinister set of circumstances brought him to his desperate end, and how will his survivors cope with the truth without tearing one another apart?

An Air That Kills eBook Margaret Millar Reviews

Ron Galloway is supposed to meet his buddies for an annual fishing weekend, but never shows up. At first it seems like he's just blowing them off, but of course that's not the full story. The plot reveals itself as characters' motivations are peeled away like layers of an onion. The suspense is so well crafted--it starts out with just the most nebulous tension--the inkling that something is not quite right--and gradually ratchets up until it reveals a shocking plot twist I never saw coming. Pure enjoyment to read.
While this book stands on its own a fine, inticrately-plotted mystery story, what really grabbed me was all the time Margaret Millar took in creating all of its characters. It was pure joy to read about each one, and how their individual characters fit into the story, each one rendered with great detail and humorous background. Millar's biting sense of humor is not to be outdone anywhere. I laughed out loud several times while reading this, as Millar could obviously be quite playful with her characters while telling a serious story. A mystery in the hands of an expert storyteller. Recommended!
Esther Galloway had been going for scenes lately. Ron Galloway hoped such behavior did not continue. Galloway did not arrive at the lodge for fishing to meet his friends as planned. Another of the wives, Thelma, had begged Ron not to go. She claimed that she had intuitions that it would not be a good idea to go to the lodge.
Thelma said she was pregnant and was going to call the child Ron. Esther said that Ron may have been a good friend but he ws a lousy husband. Two police officers showed up at the lodge. Harry Bream, Ralph Turee, Bill Winslow, and Joe Hepburn had been up most of the night trying to track down Ron Galloway. Thelma received a call. Ron had tried to call his first wife. He was rambling.
Ron Galloway's wallet was found. Harry reported to Esther that Thelma had left him. A plaid cap was found on the beach. A car was located in twenty feet deep water. Ron was buckled into the driver's seat and dead.
Harry ran his car into a street car. It was believed that Harry had gone to Bolivia. I will not ruin things and disclose the ending. The book is fairly well done. One of the characters, not discussed in this precis, Ralph Turee is very well drawn.
